How To Stop Drinking Alcohol: Day 1 – Purpose

Did You Wake Up Hung-Over This Morning?
When I was drinking I used to have a pretty regular ritual. After about 4 drinks I would start to think about all of these exciting, great and amazing accomplishments I was going to do in my life and how proud everyone would be of me. The irony is the drinking is what was stopping me from EVER actually doing any of these. I would go about drinking the rest of the night, wake up in the morning with some degree of a hang-over, do my best to get through the day barely accomplishing the “must-do’s” and then start the process all over again that night. A great quote I love is the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but hoping for different results. I sure hoped a lot for different results, but I never changed anything so of course the results stayed the same.
Does any of this sound familiar to you?
Do you know what you REALLY want in your life or do you have a clear written vision or mission for what you want in your life?
Think about this last question for a second. Most companies, whether they are small businesses or the largest corporations in the world, have a clear vision and mission for their company. There is a logical reason why, because this is a proven technique to ensure the company is successful at achieving its core objectives, whether it is selling software, making “widgets”, or providing effective therapeutic services.
Without really knowing what YOUR ultimate purpose is in life it is virtually impossible to find your way to it. The finding a needle in a haystack analogy fits perfectly here.
This is a very simple concept, but how many of us go through life on auto-pilot without REALLY thinking about what we want. Not what we want for dinner, or just that we want to learn how to stop drinking or what we want to do this weekend, but what would make life REALLY fulfilling. Is it a career that gets you excited to wake up to every day, or creating an amazing and fun family life, or volunteering time at meaningful organizations in your local community, or simply being a wonderful friend, father, spouse or sibling?
Even if you do know what you really want in life have you actually taken the time to write it down?
Without knowing and focusing on your end outcome, purpose or goal you desire in life you are virtually guaranteeing you will never accomplish them. You will never learn how to stop drinking alcohol for good.
For me I “shoved” all my dreams under my alcoholism and every time I drank I was making sure they stayed hidden away (virtually guaranteeing I would never learn how to stop drinking alcohol), but once I uncovered them my desire to drink started to change because I started to realize that alcohol was destroying my chance at ever accomplishing my dreams.
How To Stop Drinking Alcohol: Day 1 – Action
The “How To Stop Drinking Alcohol” Day 1 assignment is very simple. Oh, and yes, there is a daily assignment, usually written . I would love to say just read this, think about it and you will be on your merry way to sobriety, but the reality is you have most likely spent years “strengthening” your addiction so the process of thinking about and writing down your answers is an absolute must to learning how to stop drinking. And trust me with this, there is magic in writing things down – something happens when the ink (whether it is real ink, or just electronic ink if you are using a word processing application) hits the “paper”. And I tried, A LOT, to prove this wrong, but it wasn’t until I started writing things down that things really started to change for me.
So back to How To Stop Drinking Alcohol Assignment 1 – I want you to think about your life purpose, or what outcomes you want in your life.
What do you want in your life?
I am sure you have many professional and personal goals, whether they are health or family related, career or community related. Write these goals down. They don’t have to be perfect and you don’t have to spend a lot of time doing this, just get some down on paper.
Does your addiction move you closer or further away from accomplishing what you want in life?
I know for me I thought many of my goals were unachievable, but what I realized is there was only one thing blocking me from this, and that was my alcoholism. Knowing what your purpose is will allow you to start shedding some light and perspective on your addiction and will start the recovery process.
