How To Quit Drinking Resource #1 – NIAA:
The NIAA is part of the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. government ‘s medical research agency. The NIAA conducts biomedical and behavioral research on the causes, consequences, treatment, and prevention of alcoholism and alcohol-related problems. It’s a good resource for medical related information and the latest research on alcoholism and depending on your personality you might find it is a great resource to help you learn how to quit drinking.
How To Quit Drinking Resource #2 – Alcoholics Anonymous:
AA is a non-denominational, international fellowship of men and women whose primary purpose is to stay sober and help others quit drinking. Anyone who wants to learn how to quit drinking is welcome at a group meeting where anonymous attendees share their stories and struggles and support one another’s sobriety. AA’s 12-step program is based on humility and the acknowledgement of a power greater than oneself. One of my favorite things to do is to use the local state website to find nearby speaker meetings, where I can hear people their whole story of how they quit drinking.
How To Quit Drinking Resource #3 – Other Recovery Programs:
There are many recovery programs out there, each focused on different needs and featuring various approaches to sobriety. Celebrate Recovery, Rational Recovery, SMART, SOS, Women For Sobriety, DrinkWise and Moderation Management are just a few of the groups and programs that can provide help to alcoholics who want to learn how to quit drinking.
How To Quit Drinking Resource #4 – Rehab Centers:
Rehabilitation therapy can be inpatient or outpatient and usually involves a medically supervised detox and individual or group therapy. Afterwards, patients are encouraged to participate in an aftercare program to help prevent relapse. Results vary as does the length of treatment and cost. Your family doctor or local hospital can refer you to a facility.The government’s Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has a substance abuse treatment facility locator. Note that I have read as much as 90% of treatment facilities are based off the 12 steps, so if those don’t resonate with you it might not be the best resource for you to learn how to quit drinking.
How To Quit Drinking Resource #5 – Employee Assistance Programs:
It’s in a company’s best interest to help employees deal with alcohol and substance abuse issues. Check with the Human Resources or your Benefits Coordinator to find out what your employer offers in terms of alcohol and drug abuse treatment options. These are always confidential so you should not be concerned about asking for ‘how to quit drinking’ resources from your company.
How To Quit Drinking Resource #6- Psychologists, Therapists, Counselors:
Private counseling can be very beneficial in helping an alcoholic deal with the many issues involved in alcoholism and learning how to quit drinking. Whether it’s family, individual or group counseling, there are many professionals who specialize in these issues. Health insurance may cover part of the cost of treatment. I have personally found in the many therapists/psychologists I have seen, and with having my Dad being a psychologist and my Mom and Wife being licensed professional therapists, that there is a huge discrepancy between good and bad therapists. It can take some time to find one that is not only good at what they do, but also a good fit for you to really help you learn how to quit drinking.
How To Quit Drinking Resource #7 – Local Church:
Many people find a spiritual component is integral to their recovery. Whether you currently belong to a church or not, there are many congregations in your area that will gladly offer support and/or direction to services that can offer support and help you quit drinking. Celebrate Recovery is a program you will find in many churches to help you learn how to quit drinking.
How To Quit Drinking Resource #8 – Books:
If you’re not ready to make a phone call or reach out for help or you want information on the signs of alcoholism and how to quit drinking, go to your local bookstore or investigate books online. There are some wonderful, inspirational recovery memoirs available, as well as self-help books that can help you figure out your relationship with alcohol and your path to sobriety. One simple way to research is to go to Amazon.com and just search for “how to quit drinking”.
How To Quit Drinking Resource #9 – Movies:
You know how a good movie affects you long after you’ve left the theater? Need some motivation to quit drinking and some ideas on how to quit drinking? There are plenty of movies and documentaries on alcoholics that may resonate with you and support your decision to quit drinking. Rent Crazy Heart, Country Strong, Rachel Getting Married or any number of TV shows like Celebrity Rehab or Intervention to see addiction stories that are both cautionary tales and motivation to quit drinking.
