Earlier today I took a minute to review the goals I wrote on January 1st just to check-in with how I was progressing. It was exciting to see that although it has only been a few weeks I have taken a lot of positive action towards accomplishing my 2012 goals.
What about you? Did you come into 2012 with great intentions, but get sidetracked? This morning I recalled a concept related to this that I wanted to share with you.
The Biggest Illusion We Have in Life is That We Believe We Don’t Have the Resources Necessary to Accomplish Our Goals.
Are you guilty of this? I know I sure am. There are so many things that I waited way too long to try (like quitting drinking for good) because I believed I lacked the resources I needed to accomplish it. When I finally got over that false belief I realized I was never lacking the resources. The truth is a lack of resources are never the real problem. They trick you into believing they are the problem, but the real problem is our lack of resourcefulness.
And what drives us from making decisions based on our feelings of lack, or our feelings of opportunity? It all comes down to our emotions. If you get in the habit of being frustrated, bored and sad you will rarely find the resourcefulness you need to break free from that.
If you are curious, courageous and creative there is no telling what you can accomplish. If you are flexible, really care about what you are changing and get excited about it you can make just about anything work.
But often it is our lack of emotional strength that holds us back. One way to change that is to simply take that first step. There is nothing more powerful then taking that first simple step to creating change in your life.

One quote related to this topic from Tony Robbins that I love is,
It is in your moments of decisions that your destiny is shaped.
If you stop focusing on what resources you don’t have, and instead get committed, excited and creative you will find the resources you need. And once you find those resources and in that moment make a decision to act, your whole life can be propelled down a completely different path.
And let’s look at this from another perspective. What does that moment of decision really mean? To me it means something very simple. I am raising the standard in my life. I am deciding that I am no longer accepting that way of living as acceptable for me.
We all have standards we live our life by, so what our yours? Do you sell yourself short and set standards that are too low?
And this all has to do with quitting drinking and getting sober. Have you set a standard in your life that it is ok to drink a certain number of drinks a night, or drink a certain number of nights a week? What does that standard really accomplish for you and do you even stick to it?
If drinking to excess is one of your greatest challenges then commit to getting resourceful to change it. Be willing to look for creative ways and new solutions to change. And stay positive and excited about the outcome you are seeking.
And most importantly remember, it is those daily decisions that shape your destiny, so don’t treat them like meaningless small decisions.

Dave Andrews
