<p>I wanted to share with you two things I was lucky enough to do this past week for the first time in my life.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">First, I was able to visit Maui with my wife &#8211; something we have always dreamed of doing, but at the start of this year had no idea we would be doing in 2012.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Second, I was able to attend an exclusive retreat led by Jack Canfield, James Malinchak and Patty Aubery with less than 20 other participants.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">This retreat ended up being one of the best experiences of my life and I am in awe that I was lucky enough to attend. For me this serves as another reminder of how much my life has changed since getting sober and what is possible in sobriety.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">I wanted to share this quick video shot from the balcony of the multimillion dollar house where the training was held. In it I include a quick tip on how to quit drinking that I think you will enjoy.</p>

<p>What is a <i>high functioning alcoholic</i>?<br />

<p style="text-align: justify;">A <u>high functioning alcoholic</u> is usually defined as someone that is able to maintain a successful career and give the appearance of maintaining their outside life with regard to family, friends and health all while drinking alcoholically.</p>
</div></div>
<p style="text-align: justify;">With the Sobriety Coaching services I provide and my flagship product, <a title="The 30-Day Sobriety Solution" href="http://thesobrietysolution.com/30day">The 30-Day Sobriety Solution</a>, I encounter the high functioning alcoholic every day. Because of that I recently had the honor of being one of the featured experts in an article written by Meredith Lepore in The Grindstone discussing the high functioning alcoholic &#8211; <a title="The High Functioning Alcoholic" href="http://thegrindstone.com/work-life-balance/i-was-an-alcoholic-during-the-best-years-of-my-career-673/" target="_blank">I Was An Alcoholic During The Best Years Of My Career</a>.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The article breaks the myth about the “face of an alcoholic”. This was best captured by a quote from Sherry Stewart.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">I was a high functioning, extremely successful controlled drinker. I am what I call “The new face of alcoholism”. We are your doctors, lawyers, accountants, bankers, professors, paid consultants – and most of us drink /drank every night. I was not homeless, I didn’t get DUI’s, didn’t lose jobs, wasn’t disorderly. I gave my children an unrealistic view of the potential outcome for someone who drank too much. There were no “Outwardly Obvious” negative consequences for me. I drank only at home. I never drank and drove. I drank until I passed out or fell asleep at least five nights per week. I drank to escape.</p>
</blockquote>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Sherry is the epitome of the high functioning alcoholic. She was mother to 5 children and acting Vice-President of five different corporations, all while drinking to excess most nights of the week.</p>
<p>It is estimated that as many has ½ of the alcoholics are high functioning alcoholics.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">What about you? Do you live behind this facade that because you have maintained a successful career that drinking 5, 6 or 7 nights a week to excess is not a problem?</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">If you drink to excess most nights of the week it doesn&#8217;t matter how well you fit in a photo like this &#8211; a high functioning alcoholic is still an alcoholic and it will shave years, and probably tens of years, off the end of your life.</p>
<p>Now I want to finish up this post with a story that I found really inspiring.</p>
<h1>From Homeless to Harvard</h1>
<p style="text-align: justify;">A friend recently shared with me the inspiring story of Liz Murray, and how she went from homeless to Harvard. Although Liz was never an alcoholic or addict she was born into a family with two parents that lived a life of addiction. Their addiction would certainly not be classified as “high functioning”. Rather they fit the stereotype that many of us have about the typical alcoholic/addict.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Liz faced an upbringing that most of us could not even begin to imagine. She can remember seeing her parents shooting up as young as the age of 3. Liz started working at the age of 9 to feed herself and by the age of 15 she was living homeless in NYC after her mother passed away from aids.</p>
<p>This interview on Fox news shares her story and how she was able to overcome great odds.</p>

<p>In this interview she shared several things that to me really captures the essence of the human spirit.</p>
<blockquote><p>No one really owes me anything. I am going back to create what I want in this world.</p></blockquote>
<blockquote><p>Choice by choice, day by day I went to school while I was living on the street.</p></blockquote>
<p style="text-align: justify;">What I love about this attitude is she took ownership of her future. She didn&#8217;t dwell on what was fair or unfair. She didn’t focus on the fact that she was born into a family circumstance that could have easily led her down the path of addiction.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Instead she made choices every day to improve. One thing you often hear &#8220;experts&#8221; talk about is the concept that if you don&#8217;t take 100% ownership of your problems you can never heal from them. If she were to focus on blaming her parents I am convinced her story would be tragic instead of triumphant.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">She also shared a significant shift she had in her attitude when she was homeless. She started living by the belief that, “It is unlikely, but possible.&#8221;</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">So many of us think about our dreams and what we want to accomplish, then spend however long it takes telling ourselves why and how we can’t do it. Although she never believed she was going to get into Harvard, she lived from the perspective of possibility. That alone was enough to get her to apply to Harvard and to her surprise she got in.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">What possibilities have you closed off in your life because you rationalized how you would never be able to do it?</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Most people I do coaching with, and that go through my quit drinking programs, have lost touch with what and who they really want to be in this world. We tend to be great at limiting ourselves and closing the doors of possibility before we even try to open them.</p>

<h1 style="text-align: center;">Nurse Reveals 5 Greatest Regrets on the Deathbed &amp; Why You Must Quit Drinking</h1>
<p style="text-align: justify;">What will be your greatest regret be when you are on your deathbed looking back on your life? Well if you don&#8217;t <b>quit drinking</b> (eventually) I am sure that will be one of them, but certainly not the only one.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Recently a friend of mine sent me a great article where a nurse answers addresses this important question, which I will come back to in a minute.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">This article reminded me of another event that happened almost exactly a year ago. I was at my Grandmother’s funeral, the service had just ended and about 30 of us were standing around the grave paying our respects.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">As I was standing there contemplating life and death I heard this crackling noise and felt the earth start trembling below my feet. Before I had time to comprehend what was going on, or even consider moving from my position, a 100 foot tree uprooted and came crashing down right next to all of us.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">If that tree fell just 10 feet the other direction there is no telling how many people would have been killed or severely injured, including myself. Here is a picture I took with my phone. On the right side of the picture you can see the enormous root system sticking up.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">In that moment I was reminded how precious life is and how quickly it can be taken away. I think back on that event quite frequently when I am struggling with meaningless problems at work or with family and friends. Whenever I am really frustrated I like to remind myself that in the big scheme of things most issues that come up are really just not important.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">A majority of visitors to my site are looking for answers to how to <i>quit drinking</i> or overcome other addictions so I wanted to share this article. It is full of wisdom and really puts things into perspective.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Take a look at the list and ask yourself how many of these would be true today for you. Also if you are still drinking ask yourself if drinking makes these more or less likely to happen in your life.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">From my perspective at least 4 of these 5 regrets will be true for you on your deathbed if you don&#8217;t remove excessive drinking from your life. But perhaps a greater concern how soon this event will come if you are not able to quit drinking.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">I was coaching someone earlier this month and he shared with me that over the last year 2 of his friends lost their lives from asphyxiation when passed out drunk. Sadly this is not an uncommon occurrence.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">One of the takeaways from this article that I always work with people on is closing your eyes and basically fast forwarding your life.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">If you keep drinking or abusing drugs what will your life look like in 1, 3, 5 and 10 years out? Will you still be alive? Will you have taken a chance at fulfilling some of those life long dreams? Will you be a good role model to your loved ones?</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">But if you were to quit drinking what would happen? What would you do with that extra time? How much older would you live to? What dreams would you actually try to fulfill?</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">When you are honest with this process it usually does a great job at setting the stage for sobriety.</p>
<p>The quote at the end of this article captures it best.</p>
<blockquote><p>Life is a choice. It is YOUR life. Choose consciously, choose wisely, choose honestly. Choose happiness.</p></blockquote>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The only thing I would add is choose sobriety and choose to find and follow your life purpose and happiness will follow.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Earlier today I took a minute to review the goals I wrote on January 1st just to check-in with how I was progressing. It was exciting to see that although it has only been a few weeks I have taken a lot of positive action towards accomplishing my 2012 goals.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">What about you? Did you come into 2012 with great intentions, but get sidetracked? This morning I recalled a concept related to this that I wanted to share with you.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><div class="divider"></div>
<h5 style="text-align: center;"><strong>The Biggest Illusion We Have in Life is That We Believe We Don’t Have the Resources Necessary to Accomplish Our Goals.</strong></h5>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><div class="divider"></div>
Are you guilty of this? I know I sure am. There are so many things that I waited way too long to try (like quitting drinking for good) because I believed I lacked the resources I needed to accomplish it. When I finally got over that false belief I realized I was never lacking the resources.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The truth is a lack of resources are never the real problem. They trick you into believing they are the problem, but <strong>the real problem is our lack of resourcefulness.</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">And what drives us from making decisions based on our feelings of lack, or our feelings of opportunity? It all comes down to our emotions. If you get in the habit of being frustrated, bored and sad you will rarely find the resourcefulness you need to break free from that.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">If you are curious, courageous and creative there is no telling what you can accomplish. If you are flexible, really care about what you are changing and get excited about it you can make just about anything work.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">But often it is our lack of emotional strength that holds us back. One way to change that is to simply take that first step. There is nothing more powerful then taking that first simple step to creating change in your life.<br />

One quote related to this topic from Tony Robbins that I love is,</p>
<blockquote><p>It is in your moments of decisions that your destiny is shaped.</p></blockquote>
<p style="text-align: justify;">If you stop focusing on what resources you don’t have, and instead get committed, excited and creative you will find the resources you need. And once you find those resources and in that moment make a decision to act, your whole life can be propelled down a completely different path.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">And let’s look at this from another perspective. What does that moment of decision really mean? To me it means something very simple. I am raising the standard in my life. I am deciding that I am no longer accepting that way of living as acceptable for me.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">We all have standards we live our life by, so what our yours? Do you sell yourself short and set standards that are too low?</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">And this all has to do with quitting drinking and getting sober. Have you set a standard in your life that it is ok to drink a certain number of drinks a night, or drink a certain number of nights a week? What does that standard really accomplish for you and do you even stick to it?</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">If drinking to excess is one of your greatest challenges then commit to getting resourceful to change it. Be willing to look for creative ways and new solutions to change. And stay positive and excited about the outcome you are seeking.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">And most importantly remember, it is those daily decisions that shape your destiny, so don’t treat them like meaningless small decisions.</p>

Well I am excited to be able to share the first success story of 2012 with you today.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">One of the roadblocks I always come across when talking to people struggling to quit drinking is getting people to overcome their doubts of ever getting sober, let alone being able to actually have a fun life without drinking. That is why I love sharing success stories.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">You get listen to real people sharing their real story and hopefully you realize that they are no different then you. And if they can quit drinking and start living the life they were always meant to live, why can&#8217;t you.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">So I am excited to introduce you to Jack. Jack is in his mid-30’s, a teacher and lives in London. <p style="text-align: justify;">I have been meaning to write a blog on Steve Jobs since he passed October 5th, 2011. A lot has been written about him since late last  year, but I wanted to apply some of his wisdom to quitting drinking.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">If you don’t know Steve Jobs he was the CEO of Apple and considered one of the greatest visionaries of our generation. Having worked in computers and technology most of my adult life I have grown to respect Jobs and how he pushed the boundaries of innovation. He will also go down as one of the best marketers of our time.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Shortly after his death I was talking to Josh Kaufman, author of <a rel="nofollow" title="The Personal MBA - Josh Kaufman" href="http://personalmba.com/">The Personal MBA</a> (great book!), and he highly recommended that I go listen to the commencement address Jobs delivered to Stanford graduates in 2005. <p style="text-align: justify;">Within minutes of listening I was riveted to what he had to say. The speech is full of wisdom and because I thought it really applied to quitting drinking and overcoming adversity I wanted to share some big &#8220;<i>quit drinking</i>&#8221; ideas I got from it.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The way he delivered his message was by telling three short stories from his past and what he learned from them. Teaching through story telling is an art, and he mastered it in this speech.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Here are 3 big <u>quit drinking</u> ideas I got from those stories. All of the quotes below are from Steve Jobs speech.<br />

<h3 style="text-align: center;"><strong>Big Quit Drinking Idea #1</strong></h3>
<h3 style="text-align: center;"><em>“You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards.”</em></h3>
<p style="text-align: justify;">This quote came out of his story about how he dropped out of college and just decided to start taking a calligraphy class at another nearby college. He elaborated by saying&#8230;</p>
<blockquote>
<p style="text-align: justify;">None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life. But ten years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me. And we designed it all into the Mac. It was the first computer with beautiful typography. If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts. And since Windows just copied the Mac, it’s likely that no personal computer would have them.</p>
</blockquote>
<p>He ended the story with the following lesson&#8230;</p>
<blockquote>
<p style="text-align: justify;">You have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.</p>
</blockquote>
<p style="text-align: justify;">I take a lot of different lessons away from this first story he shared, but there is one that really stands out for me. Your struggles, challenges and your “mistakes” are hard to understand in the moment, but with time comes clarity.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">I can look at my past in two ways. How did I waste all of those years drinking alcohol to excess almost every night? Where would I be today if I quit drinking a lot younger like I should have?</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">OR, I can look back and say wow, those experiences helped create who I am today. And who I am today is someone that knows what it is like first hand to really struggle and eventually overcome a major dependency to alcohol. And with that knowledge I can help others do the same.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">To me when I look back at all those years struggling I can now &#8220;connect the dots&#8221; and see it was all for a reason instead of looking back on it with regret, shame and embarrassment.<br />

<h3 style="text-align: center;"><strong>Big Quit Drinking Idea #2</strong></h3>
<h3 style="text-align: center;"><em>“Getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me.”</em></h3>
<p style="text-align: justify;">If you know the Steve Jobs story then you know he was fired from Apple and went on to fund Pixar (the pioneer of computer generated films) and NeXT (which was later ironically bought by Apple).</p>
<p>In this story he shared that&#8230;</p>
<blockquote>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.</p>
</blockquote>
<p>He followed up by saying&#8230;</p>
<blockquote>
<p style="text-align: justify;">It was awful tasting medicine, but I guess the patient needed it. Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don’t lose faith. I’m convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You’ve got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work.</p>
</blockquote>
<p style="text-align: justify;">There are at least a couple pieces of wisdom from this story. A big one is don’t give up. Find what you love to do and actually do it.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">And really this couldn’t be more relevant to quitting drinking. To me I couldn’t do what I love to do until I quit drinking. And I couldn’t quit drinking UNLESS I didn’t give up.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Don’t get me wrong, I gave up the attempt to quit drinking A LOT, but thankfully it was always temporary. I would come back with a new idea or approach and added leverage and was able to finally figure out the answer on how to quit drinking for good.<br />

<h3 style="text-align: center;"><strong>Big Quit Drinking Idea #3:</strong></h3>
<h3 style="text-align: center;"><em>“If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?”</em></h3>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Here is the rest of the quote that Jobs shared during this story in which he tells about when he was diagnosed with Pancreatic cancer.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: “If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you’ll most certainly be right.” It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?” And whenever the answer has been “No” for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.</p>
</blockquote>
<blockquote>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything — all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure – these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.</p>
</blockquote>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Now this of course can be misinterpreted by those of us that love drinking . Because if you are actively drinking most likely if someone said, &#8220;live like this is your last day&#8221;, you are going to make the choice to drink.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The big takeaway for me in this is the regular “check-in” he did with himself about what he would do if it was his last day alive. Early in sobriety I used to regularly ask myself if I was moving further or closer to my next drink. If the answer was closer too many days in a row I knew I needed to make a change.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">2012 is almost here and with it comes a whole new opportunity to start fresh. I LOVE this time of the year. But I used to love it for very different reasons. This used to be the season where I could rationalize drinking to excess. Holiday parties, extra time off from work, family outings &#8211; all leading up to one of the biggest party nights of the year, New Years Eve.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">But unlike my drinking days New Years means something profoundly different to me now. I actually get to reflect on the past year and be happy about what I have accomplished. I also get to look forward to the New Year and set some fun and meaningful goals/resolutions.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Also be sure read below as I share personally why 2012 is a very exciting (and different) year for me.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">What goals do you have for 2012? Is lasting sobriety, or a cutback in drinking, a goal for you? Or is it something else, like health and fitness, spending more time with your family or saving money?</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">No matter what they are there are proven ways to increase your odds of actually fulfilling your goals, resolutions, dreams and desires.</p>
<h5 style="text-align: center;"><strong>Here are 12 tips that can help rock your 2012 New Years Resolutions.</strong></h5>

<li style="text-align: justify;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Write Down Your Resolutions</strong></span> &#8211;  This is so easy and so important. Get them in a journal, in a document on your computer or even on a sticky note, but most importantly get them written down somewhere.</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Make Your Resolutions/Goals Clear and Measurable</strong> - If your resolution is too subjective or not specific enough you set yourself up for failure. For example there is not much confusion around a goal that states you will quit drinking for the month of January, 2012. But if you were to simply say I will cutback drinking in 2012 that not only might be hard to really measure, but succeeding in that goal could still end up being a failure to you if that cutback was something very minimal.</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Tell Someone Else Your New Years Resolutions/Goals</strong> - There is nothing like telling others to make you accountable and help ensure you will follow through.</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Find a Role Model/Mentor</strong> &#8211; Find someone that has already accomplished what you are setting out to do and follow their lead. And if they are someone famous or well known find their websites, read what they have written, follow them on Twitter, Facebook and other social media websites. And most importantly don&#8217;t be shy &#8211; ask for their help.</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Find a Friend/Accountability Partner</strong> &#8211; This may be the same person as above, but personally I find it can work better if they are different people. For example when I am seeking out fitness goals I read books and follow blogs of specific trainers/teachers in the field but then I also set up an accountability partner locally to workout/train with. I even occasionally have financial rewards/penalties setup with them to help me follow through, i.e. if I don&#8217;t workout 5 days a week I have to give my friend 5 dollars for that week, but if I do workout 5 days a week for the month I get to buy myself some sort of reward.</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Track and Measure Your Progress</strong> &#8211; This simple step can propel you forward. Check in every week and track whether you are moving closer or further from your goal. If you are off track no big deal, make adjustments. But the simple truth is if you don&#8217;t track and measure how you are doing you rarely will succeed.</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Be Realistic</strong> &#8211; I LOVE dreaming big, but the truth is sometimes it creates problems for me. If you dream too big the finish line can seem too far away and it can stop you in your tracks. You can have a HUGE goal, but give yourself some easier stepping stones to build up to this huge goal. Remember, being realistic is NOT being pessimistic, rather it is just setting yourself up for better odds of success.</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Pick Goals/Resolutions that are In Sync with Your Values</strong> &#8211; Try to get in touch with your core values and pick goals that match those. For example if a core value of yours is honesty but when you drink you are dishonest picking the resolution to quit drinking will also help you live by your core values.</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Plan</strong> &#8211; This is a bit redundant, but take some time to plan. Plan the what, when, where and how.</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Have Fun</strong> &#8211;  Find ways to make accomplishing your goals and resolutions fun. If it is fun you will follow through. Maybe you can use it as an opportunity re-kindle an old friendship. Or learn a new hobby or sport.</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><strong>BELIEVE</strong> &#8211; If you don&#8217;t beleive you can succeed it is likely you won&#8217;t. It is ok if you have doubt, but as you adopt some of these strategies you will find your beliefs will follow. And believing is often followed by achieving.</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><strong>The Number 12 Tip (and the most important) is to Be Passionate</strong> &#8211; Get excited about your resolution/goal and think of every and any reason for why you want and need to accomplish it. The bigger your WHY the more likely you will follow through. For example, if it is about quitting drinking it isn&#8217;t about the act of quitting as much as it is about what quitting drinking will bring you. Why you must change and what positive things will come from this change. I always like the losing weight example. Losing 20 pounds might be your goal, but the why is because you will have more energy, feel better every time you get dressed in the morning, be more confident in social situations, be a better role model to friends and family, live longer, etc. A lack of clarity about the why virtually guarantees a lack of follow through in the long term.</li>
</ul>

<p style="text-align: justify;">I hope this helps give you some ideas and propels you toward taking action. Remember, you don&#8217;t need to do all of these, but pick some that seem like a good fit.</p>

<p>Phew, I finally did it! For the last year I have wanted to redo my website but I never was able to move it up my todo list high enough to get it done, but about 6 weeks ago I made up my mind.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">I built up enough pain and frustration around my website that I knew I had to make a change. So I set a deadline, built in some accountability and followed through. Something I still wasn&#8217;t sure would work, but I knew I had to try.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Be sure to scroll down if you want to see some screen shots of my previous iterations of <a title="The Sobriety Solution Home Page" href="http://thesobrietysolution.com/">The Sobriety Solution</a> website.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">I wanted to share a bit of this story because there are so many parallels with this that can be made to quitting drinking.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Think about it. When are most people successful at making a big change or overcoming a hurdle in their life? When they reach that &#8220;<strong>enough is enough</strong>&#8221; state of mind.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">And that is how I felt about my website. I reached that threshold where it was MORE painful to not make a change then it was to make a change. I had been given way a ton of feedback on my website from people I trusted that I couldn&#8217;t implement because my existing site wouldn&#8217;t support it.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">So once I reached that threshold I said ok, now I need to setup accountability so I would follow through. Generally I do almost all the techical work on my sites myself, but I had a developer that I trusted so I decided to hire him to move my new website from development into production. I set a date with him to do this WAY before my site was ready, knowing it would push me to complete it.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">That was just one of many things I did. What is interesting is I didn&#8217;t quite realize how much my old site was holding me back until after I updated it.</p>
<p>Because of my old site&#8230; 
<ul class="list-10">
<li>I didn&#8217;t want to update my blog.</li>
<li>I didn&#8217;t want to make any changes, no matter how minor.</li>
<li>I didn&#8217;t want to share my website address with others.</li>
</ul>

<p style="text-align: justify;">The bottom line is I just didn&#8217;t want to have to think about it. Psychologically it became a HUGE road block for me, one that was really holding me back.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Take an honest look. Maybe it is your job, family, health or where you live. Are there things in your life that upset you so much that the thought of them make you want to run to the bottle for a drink? What keeps you up at night?</p>
<p>Remember, improvements happen over time. Allow yourself to be mediocre, heck even suck, for a bit. You will improve, as long as you are taking steps in the right direction.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Once again I look at my website. My website was HORRIBLE when I first launched it. Ok, that might be an exagerration, but thinking back that is how it feels to me. BUT it was step in the right direction. It moved me closer to my goal.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">I knew that I could only stand having a website I wasn&#8217;t crazy about on the internet for everyone to see for so long before I did something about it. So within 5 months I had launched my updated site, a dramatic improvement.</p>
<p>Then about a year ago someone mentioned that it looked like I had a &#8220;halo&#8221; around my head (see photo below). I was like, you are right! It really bothered me as I realized it was portraying an image that I didn&#8217;t want to portray.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Then numerous people told me I had to get rid of the reverse text &#8211; the blue background with white letters.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Between these two things, using a custom template that didn&#8217;t offer me flexibility and then some of my cleanup efforts causing me more problems I became very disenchanted with my website.</p>
<h3 style="text-align: center;"><strong>The History of The Sobriety Solution Website</strong></h3>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Let&#8217;s take a quick look at the history of the site, or more specifically the headers I was using. I unfortunately don&#8217;t have a screenshot of the homepage of version 1.0, but I do have the header.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Here is The Sobriety Solution 1.0 header. And it wasn&#8217;t that it was bad, it was just that it didn&#8217;t feel like &#8220;me&#8221;. And because I was so green at building websites there was so much that didn&#8217;t work well on the site.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Then I made a substancial investment to roll out version 2.0. I spent over 2,000 dollars and tons of hours. At first it paid off as I loved it. This was at least until I got the feedback I mentioned earlier about my &#8220;halo&#8221; <img src='http://thesobrietysolution.s3.amazonaws.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' /> .</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">But I did love the logo I commissioned to get done, which is why I kept it, and I loved the photo too. The tagline was good, but wasn&#8217;t catchy enough from all the feedback I got which is why I changed it. But really the biggest problem was the website was using a custom template that offered very little flexibility.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">If there is one thing you need on a website it is flexibility. And once again you can make a parallel to <i>how to quit drinking</i>. You have to be flexible in your approach because what works for one person might not work for you.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">So here it is &#8211; The Sobriety Solution 3.0. The blogs are so much nicer and easier to read and I like the header more too &#8211; just cleaner. Is there room for improvement? Of course! But for me it is all about taking steps in the right direction. And now I actually can make changes, pretty easily, which makes me very happy!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Have you ever heard a story that changed your life? I know I have.</p>
<p>There is a reason why Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen have sold over 100 million copies of their <em>Chicken Soup for the Soul</em> book series.</p>
<p>Why? Because people LOVE stories, and that is what these books do great! They share fun, inspiring, moving stories that you can truly learn from.</p>
<p>You know one of the many interesting things about these books? In earlier drafts before they got published Jack and Mark used to include what lessons you could learn from each story, but in testing they found that a majority of people had no interest in seeing or reading what they thought they should learn. Readers just wanted to take in the story and interpret the lesson for themselves.</p>
<p>I love that! The reality is we all have our own tainted “glasses” we view the world through, based on all of our individual experiences, and we each can get something completely different from the same story. That is one of the reasons having conflicts in life is unavoidable, unless you simply don’t interact with anyone. Because what you say and hear can be completely different than what the other person hears or thought they said.</p>
<p>Ok, I don’t want to get too far off the point. What I really want to discuss are stories, and how important other people’s sobriety stories are to your recovery. <strong>Then I want to share with you three great (and FREE) resources that can have a profound impact on you thriving in sobriety for life!</strong></p>
<div>
<p>First, why are other people’s stories so valuable as resource for your recovery?</p>
<p>There are two main reasons that I believe Alcoholics Anonymous helped save my life, and to me today these are still two of the most valuable things you can get by stepping into an A.A. meeting. The great news is you don’t have to step into an A.A. meeting to get this, and I will show you how in this article. But first let’s discuss those two benefits that played such an important role in my sobriety.</p>
<p>First, you get to actually see, hear and believe it is possible to completely recover from alcoholism or addiction. There is nothing more powerful then that belief and what it can help you accomplish in life. We often hold ourselves back by limiting beliefs, or beliefs that only stop us from trying new things, as you probably remember from the first E-Book I sent you when you signed up for the Sobriety Starter Kit. If you do not believe you can get sober, you will NEVER attempt to get sober.</p>
<p><strong>Stories help build this belief, better than anything I know!</strong></p>
<p>Second, you realize you are not alone with your struggles. This finally allows you to get over the shame and embarrassment that comes with alcoholism and addiction and all the failed attempts at getting sober. Once you can get over the guilt and shame you can actually start down the pathway to lasting recovery. But if you get held up on your guilt and shame you will always live life in the past, never being able to move forward with the new sober you.</p>
<p>When I first started to go to A.A. meetings I looked up all the speaker meetings I could find nearby and primarily attended only those. The A.A. website is great about giving you the ability to find specific types of meetings like these. I did this because I knew how well I responded to hearing and seeing other people share their story. They inspired me and taught me valuable lessons.</p>
<p>Then I found this other amazing resource soon after that, <a rel="nofollow" title="A.A. Speaker Stories" href="http://xa-speakers.org/" target="_blank">http://xa-speakers.org/</a>. This is a site where you can download the speakers speeches from recorded meetings so you can listen to them in your car, home or wherever.</p>
<p>When I launched The Sobriety Solution website I wanted to take this a step further. You see I loved listening to the stories, but I REALLY loved being able to see and get a better idea of who was sharing the story. I am a big fan of supporting anonymity, and the anonymous nature of A.A., but for me being able to connect on a more personal level really helped me get value from the stories. So that is why on my site I share <a title="Inspiring Stories of Recovery and Quitting Drinking" href="http://thesobrietysolution.com/go/alcoholismstories" target="_blank">Inspiring Stories of Recovery</a> from mostly individuals that are open about who they are. I believe this really adds to the value you can get from their stories.</p>
<p>Last, I want to discuss another great website and one that I highly recommend. The site is <a rel="nofollow" title="Partnership for a Drug Free America" href="http://lifeafter.drugfree.org" target="_blank">http://lifeafter.drugfree.org/</a> and it is run by Partnership for a Drug-Free America. What is great about the site is that in its upper right (see the screenshot below), you can select the recovery story that fits or interests you and then browse through them. Each story is unique, and gives you great advice and ideas.</p>

<p>I do have a bit of advice when listening or reading these stories, as just the act of listening is not enough to make a profound difference in your recovery (at least without doing other work).</p>
<p>The key to getting a lot out of doing this is to look for similarities in others&#8217; stories compared with your own, and take what you can learn and apply it in your life. And then, write down in your journal what you learned. One of the biggest mistakes I see people make is focus on the differences, and that doesn&#8217;t do you any good!</p>

<p>What I love most about learning through stories is that doing so is enjoyable. For me, learning doesn’t feel like work or effort; rather, it is just something fun for me to do, and if I take another step and note what is meaningful to me from a story, I get more value for my life in sobriety.</p>
<p>So there you have it, 3 great resources for you to use that I have no doubt can help you along your pathway to sobriety.</p>
<p>I wanted to finish this article with a bit more about Jack Canfield, as I think you will find it interesting. I had the great opportunity to meet him a while back and discuss with him my <a title="The 30-Day Sobriety Solution" href="http://thesobrietysolution.com/go/30day" target="_blank">30-Day Sobriety Solution</a>. Below is a picture I got taken with him, albeit not my favorite as I was traveling that whole day and on very little sleep, but it was still a great privilege to have this opportunity.</p>

<p>What was exciting was he was very interested for several reasons.  First, he has two kids in recovery, and if you have spent time on my inspiring stories blog you might remember seeing <a title="Oran Canfield's Story of Recovery" href="http://thesobrietysolution.com/go/how-to-quit-drinking-and-addiction-stories/orancanfield-longpaststopping" target="_blank">Oran Canfield’s interview </a>(1 of his 2 sons in recovery).  It is an amazing story, so I recommend listening to the interview and/or picking up his memoir.</p>
<p>The other thing that was great to discuss was how many of his “success principles” from his recent New York Times bestselling book <em>The Success Principles</em> fit so well with many parts of what I teach in The 30-Day Sobriety Solution.</p>

<p>There are millions of examples of &#8220;regular&#8221; people that completely recover from alcohol abuse to live fulfilling, exciting and happy lives. Are you going to be one of those inspiring examples?</p>

<p>In the United States alone there are approximately 85,000 deaths a year related to alcohol, and more than <strong>2,000,000 (YES, 2 MILLION) worldwide</strong>.</p>
<p>Do not make the mistake of believing “It won’t happen to me” because over 5,000 deaths a day are proof you could be next and you might not have a “next time” to look at this program later.</p>

<h2 style="text-align: center;"><strong><em>It Doesn’t Have To Be This Way!</em></strong></h2>
<p>It took me 8 years, 10 months and 6 days to get and stay sober for good from the first time I actually tried to deal with my problem.</p>
<p>It didn’t have to be that way!</p>
<p>My first exposure to alcohol started at age 13, where I got drunk on vodka with some friends and was sick for the next three days.</p>
<p>Four years later on New Years Eve 1989/1990 I shared a 6 pack with a friend. That was where the shift inside started and was the beginning stages of almost 18 years of alcohol abuse.</p>
<p>I drank because it made me feel like I belonged. I felt happy. I felt more fun and interesting and was more confident with women. Life finally seemed great! And to me it was because of alcohol, not in spite of. Alcohol had given me the life that I felt I had been missing out on.</p>
<p>All through college I was surrounded by drinkers and it seemed normal to me. There were few consequences from my drinking. I got great grades. I worked throughout college. I had lots of friends, a serious girlfriend and seemingly my whole life was ahead of me.</p>
<p>But there was one problem. I drank more nights of the week then not. And when I didn’t drink I was always thinking about and planning when I could drink again.</p>
<p>I drank throughout college and after graduating I never let up, in fact to compensate for not being surrounded by the college drinking community I started drinking alone, started hiding my drinking and started drinking even more.</p>
<p>Vodka became my drink of choice, because I could somewhat mask the smell. I could supplement my drinking with vodka so it appeared to everyone around me that I was drinking a “normal” amount, when in fact I was drinking far more than the normal drinker.</p>
<p>That stage lasted for a year and a half and shortly after getting married I tried for the first time to get sober. But not really. I just wanted to drink “normally”, not really quit drinking. I was convinced that I just had to go back to how I drank in the early years.</p>
<p>This was something I would try many times over the next 8 years.</p>
<p><strong><em>My attempts to quit included all sorts of things.</em></strong></p>

<ul class="list-2">
<li>They included going to therapists and psychologists.</li>
</ul>
<ul class="list-2">
<li>They included books and other self help material.</li>
</ul>
<ul class="list-2">
<li>They included attempts at substituting my problem for other ones, such as food and marijuana.</li>
</ul>
<ul class="list-2">
<li>They included trying to control how much I drank, how often I drank and what types of alcohol I drank.</li>
</ul>
<ul class="list-2">
<li>They included hypnotherapy.</li>
</ul>
<ul class="list-2">
<li>They included willpower, extensively.</li>
</ul>
<ul class="list-2">
<li>They included new workout regimes and diets.</li>
</ul>

<p>The bottom line is none worked for very long. They all led me back down the same path, but leaving me worse off than before. I might quit drinking for a few weeks, or even at one point a few months, but I always came back. I came back with a vengeance, making up for lost time.</p>
<p>Hiding alcohol had become a regular part of my life and obsessing over when and where and how much I could drink became a daily ritual.</p>
<p>And then in 2006 things finally changed. My chances were running out and I knew my “9 lives” of drinking were almost gone.</p>
<p>It was clear that at any moment my wife would leave me and I would lose her and my two precious daughters.</p>
<p>And once I lost them to divorce I had no idea where my drinking would take me. The little control I actually felt I had over it was kept in check by living with my family that I loved more than anything. With them gone, my career could very well be soon to follow.</p>
<p>I was only really good at two things in my life during my peak drinking years, my career and my drinking. With the pain of possibly losing my family I knew that keeping any level of sanity in my life would most likely be lost. Drinking would play an even greater role in my life, which was a scary thought.</p>
<p>I finally gave in went to AA, which was really the start of sobriety for me as it opened up my eyes to the possibility of living a sober life when I met others like me that had done it. AA saved my life, that I do know, but I unfortunately cannot claim that it was AA and the 12 steps that allowed me to really recover and thrive in sobriety.</p>

As I said in the past, I tried true willpower to quit drinking on my own and I tried all kinds of things and switching to beer or wine and tried AA couple of times and well, there are very nice people there, they don’t really have a method, it’s kinda ambiguous, so, this is something that I could sit down, I could do something every night and have all my home work and would tell me what to do and it would also help me with why I am feeling strangely this first week.
