Is it really possible to quit drinking, or become what most like to refer to as a “normal drinker”?
I probably asked myself this question a thousand times when I was still struggling with excessive drinking.
My name is Dave Andrews, and I am a regular (and real) person. I am also a recovered alcoholic, with over 8 years of sobriety.
But it wasn’t always that way. I drank excessively for almost 18 years, and the last 10 years of those I REALLY wanted to stop. Those last 10 years were full of deception, unhappiness and an intense inner struggle that never seemed to end.
I tried to quit (and I mean really quit) numerous times over that decade. I went to therapists, psychologists and Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. I tried willpower, “how to quit drinking” books, hypnotherapy, self-help content, work-out regimes and diets.
I failed every time.
I was scared to quit drinking AND scared of continuing to drink. My life was in shambles. My marriage was on the rocks, my job performance was starting to struggle, my health had deteriorated dramatically and my oldest daughter even told me she was afraid I was going to die.
But finally…something did work.
And I was recently able to celebrate eight years of sobriety — not to mention a new-found purpose and happiness in life.
